Physical Therapy is the use of physical procedures to treat individuals with a disability, disease, or injury to achieve and maintain functional rehabilitation and to prevent malfunction or deformity (Physical Therapy. 2016). It is prescribed for patients with varied orthopedic, neurological, vascular, and respiratory conditions. Physical therapists are employed in many different locations such as hospitals, rehab centers, clinics, nursing homes, and schools for handicapped children. They work among federal, state, and local levels and even in private practice.
Physical therapists use lots of diagnostic testing such as manual muscle testing, electrical testing, perceptual and sensory testing, functional activity testing, and measurement of range of motion. Some of the modalities physical therapists use in the treatment of patients includes application of heat or cold through ultrasonics, cryotherapy, or diathermy. Electrical stimulation is used to prevent muscle atrophy or spasticity or to relieve nerve pain. Therapeutic exercises are used to increase strength and endurance, to improve coordination and functional movement for completion of daily activities, and to increase range of motion. |
Another technique used is gait or ambulation training which helps with the assistance of parallel bars, crutches, walkers, canes, braces, orthotics, and artificial limbs. Many other modalities used include traction, massage, strapping, bandaging, and the application and removal of splints or casts.
Physical therapy developed from the ideas of the ancient Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, and Chinese. In modern times, it was established by Great Britain in the latter part of the 19th century. Due to the outbreak of polio during this time, a physical therapy school was created resulting in many more later on. Physical therapists were originally called reconstruction aides for the military. Professional physical therapists must be licensed in the state that they practice. In order to become a physical therapist you must graduate from an accredited physical-therapy program and achieve a passing score on the state-administered national exam. A bachelor's degree is all that was required until recently. Now most physical therapists are required to have a master’s or doctoral degree. Physical therapists are required to take certain classes during their college career as well as have hands-on clinical experience. |
